Blattner completes significant repower project
The 373.8 MW Logan County repower project is located in Logan County, Colorado. Blattner’s scope consisted of the mechanical overhaul of 214 existing turbines which was completed in two phases.
Phase one consisted of the mechanical overhaul of the existing 133 GE 1.5MW WTGs, including turbine blades, hub assemblies (including nose cones), gear boxes, main shafts, main bearing assemblies, generators and generator frames. The turbines were converted to 133 GE 1.5MW WTGs. Phase two consisted of the mechanical overhaul of the existing 81 turbines including turbine blades, hub assemblies (including nose cones), gear boxes, main shafts, and main bearing assemblies. The turbines were converted to 66 Siemens 2.3 MW WTGs and 15 GE 1.5 MW WTGs.
This project was the first site to actively screen for COVID-19 and was diligent in protecting the site team, putting safety first. A key factor in the success and safety of the project was the immediate implementation of a night crew to work when winds were calmer. The night crew pulled and disassembled old rotors and built and flew new rotors. There were many shifts where the night crew flew three rotors in a shift on different crane pads. Day crews gutted the nacelles and replaced components during marginal wind, allowing the night crew to focus solely on rotor assembly and installation. The team outpaced GE commissioning by 15 or more towers as the dedicated team worked well together. This project was a testament to what can be accomplished with solid planning and teamwork.
